The 6 Core Processes of ACT Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Building Psychological Flexibility for Lasting Recovery from Addiction in Greater Atlanta

At Edge Treatment, an outpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility in Roswell, GA, we help individuals throughout the greater Atlanta metro area overcome substance use challenges with evidence-based approaches. One powerful tool we incorporate is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), also known as acceptance commitment therapy or acceptance therapy.

ACT focuses on developing psychological flexibility — the ability to stay present, accept difficult experiences, and take meaningful action aligned with your values. This empowers lasting recovery rather than just symptom management.

Understanding the Foundation of ACT

ACT is rooted in the idea that struggling against painful thoughts, emotions, or cravings often keeps people stuck. Instead of trying to eliminate discomfort (which can fuel addiction cycles), ACT teaches six core processes that work together to create meaningful change. These processes help clients in our outpatient programs build resilience and commit to a life of sobriety and purpose.

1. Acceptance

Acceptance involves willingly making room for uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and sensations — like cravings, anxiety, or guilt — without fighting or avoiding them. It doesn’t mean giving up or approving of the pain; it means dropping the struggle so energy can go toward recovery. In addiction treatment, this reduces the power of triggers and prevents relapse driven by emotional avoidance.

2. Cognitive Defusion

Cognitive defusion (or defusion) helps you see thoughts as just mental events — not facts that must control your behavior. Techniques like labeling thoughts (“I’m having the thought that…”) or visualizing them as leaves floating down a stream create distance.

For those in recovery, this is invaluable when facing thoughts like “I can’t handle this without using,” allowing you to observe without acting on them.

3. Contact with the Present Moment

Also called being present or mindful awareness, this process anchors you in the here-and-now rather than ruminating on the past or worrying about the future. Simple mindfulness exercises help you notice what’s happening internally and externally with curiosity. In our Atlanta-area programs, this skill supports craving management and emotional regulation during daily life.

4. Self as Context

This process encourages viewing yourself as the “observer” — the stable sense of self that notices thoughts, feelings, and experiences without being defined by them. You are not your addiction, your mistakes, or your struggles. This perspective fosters self-compassion and separates identity from substance use, which is transformative in long-term recovery.

5. Values

Values clarification involves identifying what truly matters to you — family, health, career, spirituality, or personal growth. ACT helps reconnect with these core directions that addiction may have overshadowed. By clarifying values, clients gain a compelling “why” for sobriety that goes far beyond just quitting.

6. Committed Action

The final process translates values into concrete, step-by-step behaviors — even when it’s difficult. This might include attending therapy sessions, rebuilding relationships, pursuing hobbies, or practicing healthy routines. Committed action builds momentum and creates a fulfilling life in recovery.
